Tall Sips 2017

Tall Sips is a city wide celebration of Halifax’s drink culture brought to you by The Coast. Participating restaurants, bars, cafes, and pop-ups will feature a specialty cocktail or non-alcohol beverage at a discount to all Haligionans and visitors who like to raise a glass. Mixologists, baristas and shakeologists are being challenged to create a nautical themed drink featuring local ingredients to welcome visitors and crew for the Rendez-Vous 2017 Tall Ships Regatta. The official Regatta event runs July 29-August 1. The Tall Sips campaign runs July 27 – August 2. To learn more about how you can participate please read TallSipsTallShipsparticipant for all the details. I could use a Tall Sip right about now.
Retailers: This is also a great opportunity to have a “sail” and get into the spirit of RDV 2017 Tall Ships Regatta #rdv2017 #tallshipsns. With 300,000 people expected, and more promotion of the North End than ever before, we hope to see an influx of folks coming to our neighbourhood.

CHRISTMAS WITH VERVE: Bob Chaisson – Plan B Halifax

How do you celebrate the holidays?
“With verve! Some people do the holidays half-assed, we do it whole-assed, we celebrate the holidays ‘ample-butt’!”

“We like to lay on the spread; we’ve always got mulled cider going at the store for the annual levee. We also feature plenty of vintage retro Christmas stuff like the Shelf Elf this time of year.”

Giving back:
“We’re big on giving time to volunteerism. We often give to Christmas Daddies and we are this year too.”

Best gift idea:
Vintage books with old inscriptions -$3-12

Bob Chaisson is the president of Plan B Halifax at 2180 Gottingen Street, a retail coop that supports local artists in the community. He knows a lot about the North End and is delighted by its progress.

This tournament is a fund-raising initiative for Ward 5 – a non-profit organization in Halifax’s North End that provides vital support and services to those who are among the neediest in our community. Ward 5 does a lot with very limited funding. In recent months The Ward 5 Centre has under gone much needed renovations to their kitchen, bathroom facilities and Food Bank Centre, with generous donations from the Community, along with your help, the Centre continues to serve hot meals for seniors, breakfast programs for children, rehabilitation and job training programs for over 40 years. Every cent  raised is going right back to Ward 5. Last year, the Ward 5 Golf Tournament raised $6383.00 which provided 4000+ meals at the community centre.

District 7 & 8 2015-16 Participatory Budgeting

District 7 & 8 2015-16 Participatory Budgeting
Councillors Jennifer Watts and Waye Mason are inviting the community to provide input on how to spend each district’s 2015-2016 capital budget of $94,000.

The process, which is called Participatory Budgeting, was initiated in Halifax in 2013 by Councillor Mason. He held two public sessions in summer of 2014 – the first was an open exchange of ideas on how to spend the money and a vote was held at the second. The selected projects included funds for a new search and rescue vehicle for Halifax Regional Search and Rescue Team, bicycle repair stands on Dalhousie University campus and a scaffolding installation on Argyle Street during the building of Trade Centre. In District 8 last year, residents supported playgrounds, increasing accessibility for community buildings and signage for the Africville Museum.
Councillor Watts says “It will be really exciting to see the great suggestions and ideas that will come from community and neighbourhood groups for making District 8 and our municipality a better place to live. This is seed money to grow great neighbourhood initiatives.”
